Welcome to the homepage of the artist Josef Gassler!

Josef Gassler was an Austrian artist with a cosmopolitan orientation, who worked in the countries of the Habsburg Monarchy as well as in France.

After early successes as a young student in Vienna, he moved to Carlsbad first and then to Paris. In form and content his works developed in accordance to the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Realism), which was the relevant kind of art also in Paris in the 1920s. In his oeuvre are landscapes, still lifes and scenes from everyday life, which show that Gassler was an exact observer of his surrounding world. He did also a lot of sketches for decorative art as well as sketches for murals and theater.

On his 70th birthday he received the Golden Laurel of the Künstlerhaus in Vienna.
